That is what happens, almost every time. Ouzoud is the tallest waterfall in Morocco, a hundred and ten metres of river dropping through red rock in three stages, and it is genuinely spectacular. Then a wild Barbary macaque walks past your table while you are eating lunch, and suddenly that is the story everybody tells at home.
I am Nourddine, and I will tell you plainly what this day is. It is a hundred and fifty kilometres north east of Marrakech, roughly two and a half hours of driving each way, through the plain and then up into the Middle Atlas foothills. You spend four or five hours at the falls and the rest of the day in the car. People weigh that up and then almost all of them come back saying it was worth it, which after this many years is good enough evidence for me.
Ouzoud means olives, and you understand why on the walk down. The path descends through terraced olive groves in switchbacks, past old stone mills that still crush olives by water power in the autumn, with the roar getting louder every turn until the gorge opens up in front of you. In spring, when the flow is heavy, the spray throws a rainbow across the basin most of the morning. In late summer the water is thinner and the pools at the bottom are warm enough to swim in.
At the base there are small wooden boats that take you out under the spray for a few dirhams, which is undignified, extremely wet and one of the best things you can do in a day. There is also a path along the El Abid gorge for anyone who wants to keep walking, and a cluster of restaurant terraces on the clifftop where you can sit for two hours looking straight at the falls.
The trip is private, which is what makes the difference here. The coaches arrive together around eleven, dump forty people at the top, and leave at two. We arrive when we want, walk at your pace, and stay until the light is good. If you decide halfway down that your knees have had enough, we turn around and drink tea at the top instead. 08:00  · Pickup in Marrakech
I collect you from your riad, hotel or apartment. If you are staying deep inside the medina where cars cannot enter, we agree on the nearest gate or square and I walk in to meet you. We head north east out of the city.
09:30  · Coffee stop
A short break somewhere on the road as the plain gives way to hills. Coffee, mint tea, and a chance to stretch. Twenty minutes, because getting to the falls before the tour buses is worth more than a long stop here.
10:30  · Arrival at Ouzoud
We park above the village and walk to the viewpoints on the rim first, so you see the whole drop before you go anywhere near it. This is where the wide photographs come from, and it is the only place you get the full height in one frame.
11:00  · The descent
Down through the olive terraces on a stepped path, around thirty to forty minutes at a comfortable pace, stopping at the old mills on the way. The macaques live along this stretch, and if we are quiet we usually see a group of them. They are wild animals, so we watch them and we do not feed them.
11:45  · At the foot of the falls
Time in the basin, where the noise and the spray are constant and the scale finally makes sense. The little boats run from here into the mist below the main drop. In the warm months you can swim in the pools. Bring a towel if that appeals to you, because it will not occur to you until you are standing there.
12:45  · Gorge walk, or back up
If you want more, a path follows the El Abid gorge downstream past the Berber village of Tanaghmelt, an easy and very quiet hour on flat ground. If you have had enough, we climb back up by a gentler route on the far side. Either way, entirely your call on the day.
13:45  · Lunch facing the water
A long lunch on one of the terraces cut into the cliff opposite the falls. Tagine, brochettes, salads, bread and mint tea. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements are arranged in advance if you tell me when you book.
15:15  · Departure
We set off back towards Marrakech. If you would rather stay longer for the afternoon light on the water, say so and we push the return back an hour. It costs nothing to decide that on the day.
18:00  · Back in Marrakech
I drop you at your accommodation, normally around six in the evening, in time to shower and go out for dinner. Of all the long day trips from Marrakech, this is the one that gets you back at a civilised hour.
