I am Nourddine, and of everything I organise from Marrakech, this is the day that means the most to me. Not because it is the most dramatic, because it is not. Aït Ben Haddou is more photogenic and Ouzoud is louder. This one matters because it is the only trip where you spend the day among people rather than among monuments, and where the point is a conversation rather than a viewpoint.
We drive south into the High Atlas, through the gorge at Moulay Brahim and up past Asni into the Imlil valley, which sits at seventeen hundred metres under Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. The road climbs steadily, the walnut and cherry terraces close in, and by the time we park at the end of the tarmac you are in a place where mules still do most of the heavy work and where the language spoken in the street is Tachelhit, not Arabic.
From Imlil we walk. It is not a mountaineering day and you do not need to be fit. An hour or so on a mule track through the terraces to the village of Aroumd, with the summit ridge above us and irrigation channels running along the path. If walking is not your thing, a mule can carry you the same route, which is how people here have always travelled and which nobody will find strange.
Then lunch in a family house, sitting on the floor around a low table, with bread and tagine and far too much mint tea. I want to be clear that this is not a performance. These are households I have known for years, you are a guest rather than an audience, and the money goes straight to the family. If you ask questions people will answer them honestly, including the difficult ones about what has changed in these valleys since the earthquake of September 2023. Rebuilding is still visible in places, and visitors coming back has mattered a great deal here.
The day is private, so it flexes. Walkers push higher up towards the Tizi n’Tamatert pass. Families stop after twenty minutes and spend the afternoon by the river. This is the standard timing. The trip is private, so we can leave earlier for a longer walk or later for a slow morning. I confirm your pickup with you by WhatsApp the evening before.
08:30 · Pickup in Marrakech
I collect you from your riad, hotel or apartment. If you are staying deep inside the medina where cars cannot enter, we agree on the nearest gate or square and I walk in to meet you. We head south on the Asni road and the mountains are in front of us within twenty minutes.
09:15 · Moulay Brahim gorge
A stop above the gorge, where the village clings to the cliff around the shrine that gives it its name. It is a place of pilgrimage for Moroccans and almost never on a coach itinerary. Fifteen minutes and a good first view back over the plain.
09:45 · Asni
The market town for the whole valley. If you are travelling on a Tuesday the weekly souk is running and we spend longer here, walking through the produce, the livestock and the barbers working under awnings. On other days it is a short stop for coffee.
10:30 · Arrival in Imlil
The road ends here at seventeen hundred metres. Mules are being loaded in the square, the air is noticeably thinner and cooler, and Toubkal is above us. We meet the local mountain guide who walks the valley section with us.
11:00 · Walk to Aroumd
An hour on a mule track through walnut and cherry terraces, crossing irrigation channels and climbing gently towards the village of Aroumd on its rocky spur. Easy underfoot but uneven, with a gradual ascent. We stop whenever anyone wants to. A mule can be arranged in advance for anyone who would rather ride.
12:00 · Time in the village
A walk through Aroumd itself, past the threshing floor, the communal oven and the houses built one on top of another up the slope. I explain how the collective land and water rights work here, which is the part visitors find most surprising.
13:00 · Lunch with a family
A home cooked meal in a village house. Salads, bread, tagine, fruit and mint tea, eaten around a low table. Vegetarian and other dietary requirements are arranged in advance if you tell me when you book, because these meals are cooked to order rather than chosen from a menu.
14:45 · Back down, or higher up
We walk back to Imlil the way we came, or if the group is strong and the weather is good we take the longer loop with better views over the valley. If anyone wants to sit by the river with a coffee instead, that is a fine way to end the day too.
16:00 · Departure
We leave Imlil and drop back down the valley. The afternoon light on the terraces on the way out is better than anything you saw on the way in, so keep the camera to hand.
17:30 · Back in Marrakech
I drop you at your accommodation, normally between half past five and six. Short enough that you still have your evening, which is one reason I recommend this over the long drives for anyone with only a few days.

The official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Dirhams cannot be bought or sold outside Morocco, so exchange money on arrival at the airport, a bank, or an official bureau de change. ATMs are widely available in Marrakech, Fes, and Casablanca; in the desert and smaller villages they are scarce, so carry enough cash before heading out on tour. Morocco uses Type C and Type E plugs, running on 220V / 50Hz. Layers matter more than any single item: days in the Sahara can be hot while nights turn cold, especially between November and February. Pack breathable clothing, a warm layer for desert evenings, comfortable walking shoes, a scarf or turban for sand and sun, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.
