You notice it before you see anything. Somewhere past the last roundabout the air changes, the dust settles, and there is water running beside the road. That is the Ourika. It cuts down out of the High Atlas thirty kilometres south of the city, and following it upstream is one of the oldest habits Marrakech has. Families come here on Sundays. Grandmothers come here in August. It is not a discovery, it is a tradition, and that is exactly why it is good.
I am Nourddine, and I have been driving this valley for years without ever getting tired of it. Walnut trees lean over the water. Terraces of barley and mint climb the slope in steps somebody’s great grandfather cut. Houses the colour of the mountain sit stacked on the hillside, and the road narrows until you are driving between the river on one side and a wall of rock on the other.
At the top of the valley the road simply stops at Setti Fatma, a long thin village at the mouth of a gorge. Seven waterfalls come down that gorge. The first one is a scramble over wet rock, forty minutes if you take your time, and there is a small crowd at the bottom and almost nobody at the top. We go as far up as you feel like going. That is the honest measure of this trip: nobody is counting.
Then there is lunch, which is the part people describe first when they get home. The riverside restaurants set their tables on platforms out over the current, coloured plastic chairs with cold water running underneath, and you sit there for an hour and a half with a tagine and the noise of the river and no reason at all to hurry.
Everything is private. My own vehicle, my own driver or me at the wheel, no coach and no shopping stops arranged behind your back. Walkers push high into the gorge. Families never leave the riverbank. Photographers make me leave at dawn for the light on the terraces. All of those are the right way to spend this day.

This is the standard shape of the day. It is a private trip, so we can leave at dawn for the light or start slowly after breakfast. I confirm your pickup time with you by WhatsApp the evening before.
09:00 · Pickup in Marrakech
I collect you from your riad, hotel or apartment. If you are staying deep inside the medina where cars cannot enter, we agree on the nearest gate or square and I walk in to meet you. We head south, and within twenty minutes the mountains are filling the windscreen.
09:40 · Into the valley
The plain ends, the road picks up the river, and everything turns green. We stop at the first proper viewpoint over the terraces and the villages stacked on the slope, and I explain how the irrigation channels work and why the fields are shaped the way they are.
10:00 · Gardens, or the Monday market
On most days we stop at the aromatic gardens in the lower valley, where herbs and saffron are grown and distilled and the whole place smells of geranium. If you are travelling on a Monday we can go to the weekly souk at Tnine Ourika instead, which is louder, dustier and much more interesting. Around forty five minutes either way, and both are entirely optional.
11:00 · Tea in a Berber house
Half an hour in a family home in one of the villages. Mint tea, bread straight from the oven, olive oil and argan, and a look at how a house of earth and stone is actually laid out inside. These are people I know, not a stop arranged with a commission attached, and there is nothing waiting for you to buy on the way out.
11:45 · Setti Fatma and the waterfalls
The road ends and we cross the river into the village on foot. From there it is a scramble over rock and rough steps to the first waterfall, thirty to forty minutes up at an unhurried pace, with a local mountain guide walking with us. That is how it is done here and I build it into the price. Carry on to the higher falls if your legs want them, or sit at the bottom with a coffee and let the others climb. Both are a good use of an hour.
14:00 · Lunch over the river
Tagine, brochettes, salads, bread and mint tea, at a table on a platform above the water. It takes as long as it takes. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements are arranged in advance if you tell me when you book.
15:30 · An hour by the water
Walk the bank, put your feet in the river, take photographs or do nothing whatsoever. This is the part almost everybody wishes they had given more time to, so I leave it in the plan on purpose.
17:00 · Back in Marrakech
Down the valley and into the city, dropping you at your accommodation normally between five and six. Early enough that the evening in Marrakech is still yours, which is one of the quiet advantages of this trip over the long ones.
