I am Nourddine, and I send more travellers to Essaouira than to anywhere else on the coast. There is a simple reason for it. After three or four days in Marrakech, the noise, the heat and the constant negotiation start to wear people down. Essaouira is the antidote. It is a small walled port on the Atlantic, roughly two and a half hours west, where the air is fifteen degrees cooler, the streets run straight instead of in knots, and nobody is following you to their shop.
The medina is listed by UNESCO and it does not feel like the others. The Portuguese and then a French architect laid it out in the eighteenth century on a grid, with wide ramparts facing the ocean, so you can walk it for hours without getting lost. The buildings are whitewashed with blue doors and window frames, the light is soft and grey rather than harsh, and the whole place smells of salt and grilled sardines. Orson Welles filmed Othello here, Jimi Hendrix passed through in 1969, and the Gnaoua music festival still fills the squares every summer.
On the way there we cross the argan country. This tree grows almost nowhere else on earth, and the road passes through open scrubland where goats really do climb into the branches. We stop at a women’s argan cooperative, where you can watch the nuts being cracked and the oil pressed by hand, and I am clear about this: it is a genuine stop, not a commission arrangement, and nobody will pressure you to buy anything.
Once we arrive, the day is yours. Some travellers want me walking beside them through the port and the ramparts explaining what they are looking at. Others want to be dropped at the Skala and left alone until the evening with a phone number in their pocket. Both are fine. It is a private trip and I plan it around how you like to travel, not around a fixed script.
One honest word. This is around five to six hours of driving across the day, and Essaouira rewards slowness. If your schedule allows two nights there instead, take them. If it does not, this day trip is still very much worth doing, and thousands of people do it every week. Just come back for longer another time.

08:00 · Pickup in Marrakech
I collect you from your riad, hotel or apartment. If you are staying deep inside the medina where vehicles cannot enter, we agree on the nearest gate or square and I walk in to meet you. We leave the city westwards on the Essaouira road.
09:15 · Coffee and the goats in the trees
A short break in one of the roadside villages as the landscape turns to argan scrub. If the goats are up in the branches we stop for photographs. They are wild and they climb because they want the fruit, so I cannot promise them, but on most days they are there.
10:00 · Argan cooperative
Around half an hour at a women’s cooperative where argan oil is still produced the traditional way. You see the nuts cracked between stones and the paste turned by hand, and you can taste the culinary oil and amlou. Buying is entirely optional and I will not leave you alone in a sales room.
11:00 · Arrival in Essaouira
You feel the temperature drop as we come over the last hill and the Atlantic opens up. We park outside the walls, because no cars go into the medina, and walk in through Bab Doukkala.
11:15 · The medina and the ramparts
A walk through the main streets, the spice and fish markets, the old Jewish quarter and the woodworkers’ arcades under the walls, ending on the Skala de la Ville where the cannons face the sea and the waves come in hard against the rocks. Around ninety minutes at a relaxed pace, with stops wherever you want them.
12:45 · The fishing port
The blue boats, the nets, the men repairing hulls, and the stalls where the morning catch is laid out on ice. This is the loudest and most alive corner of the town and it is not staged for anyone.
13:15 · Lunch
Either grilled fish chosen from the harbour stalls, which is the classic Essaouira experience, or a proper sit down meal on a terrace above the port. I tell you honestly which places are good and which are tourist traps, then you choose.
14:30 · Free time
Two or three hours to do what you like. Walk the beach, sit with a coffee on Moulay Hassan square, shop for thuya wood and Berber jewellery without anyone rushing you, watch the kitesurfers, or take a camel or quad along the sand at the southern end of the bay if you arranged it in advance. You have my phone number the whole time.
17:00 · Departure
We meet back at the vehicle and set off inland. In summer you can stay later and watch the sun go down over the water first. Just tell me on the day and we push the return back.
19:30 · Back in Marrakech
I drop you at your accommodation, normally between half past seven and eight in the evening depending on traffic coming into the city.

The official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Dirhams cannot be bought or sold outside Morocco, so exchange money on arrival at the airport, a bank, or an official bureau de change. ATMs are widely available in Marrakech, Fes, and Casablanca; in the desert and smaller villages they are scarce, so carry enough cash before heading out on tour. Morocco uses Type C and Type E plugs, running on 220V / 50Hz. Layers matter more than any single item: days in the Sahara can be hot while nights turn cold, especially between November and February.
