I am Nourddine, and I designed this trip for travellers who want the silence of the desert but do not have three days to reach Merzouga. Agafay is a stone desert, not a sand sea. Thirty kilometres south of Marrakech the city stops, the palm groves thin out, and the ground opens into pale rolling hills with the snow line of the High Atlas sitting on the horizon. It is empty, it is quiet, and at sunset the whole plateau turns copper.
I want to be honest with you from the first line, because a lot of operators are not. Agafay is not the Sahara. There are no towering orange dunes here. What you get instead is a lunar landscape of grey and ochre rock, wide open sky, a camel ride along a dry riverbed, mint tea poured in a Berber camp, and dinner under a sky with no city glow in it. For a first taste of desert Morocco, or for a day when you simply want to leave the medina behind, it works beautifully.
You travel with me or with one of my own drivers, never with a subcontracted call centre. The vehicle is private, the schedule is yours, and if you want to stop for photographs on the Kik plateau road or spend an extra half hour at the Lalla Takerkoust lake shore, we stop. That is the whole point of booking direct.
Departures run all year. In summer we push the start later so you are not walking under the afternoon sun, and in winter you should bring a real jacket, because once the light goes the temperature in Agafay drops fast.

Times below are for the standard afternoon and evening departure. They shift by roughly an hour between summer and winter, and I confirm your exact pickup time the day before by WhatsApp.
15:00 · Pickup in Marrakech
I collect you from your riad, hotel or apartment. If you are staying deep inside the medina where cars cannot enter, we agree on the nearest square or gate and I walk in to meet you. We leave the city on the Amizmiz road heading south.
15:40 · Arrival in the Agafay hills
The tarmac gives way to a piste and the landscape empties out. We stop at a viewpoint over the plateau, with the Atlas ridge in front of us, and take the first photographs while the light is still high and clean.
16:15 · Optional lake and plateau detour
If you booked the extended version, we continue to Lake Lalla Takerkoust, a reservoir sitting under the mountains, and climb briefly onto the Kik plateau. This is farming country, and you will see far more sheep than tourists. Tell me in advance and I build it into the timing.
17:00 · Camel ride
Roughly an hour in the saddle, following a dry riverbed through the hills with a local cameleer walking alongside. The pace is slow and no experience is needed. If riding is not for you, say so when you book and we replace it with a guided walk on the same route, at no extra cost.
18:15 · Arrival at the camp and mint tea
We reach the camp, you are welcomed with mint tea and almonds, and you have time to settle in, use the facilities and look around before the light changes.
18:45 · Sunset
We walk up to the best ridge nearby and watch the sun drop behind the western hills. This is the twenty minutes people photograph most, and it is the reason I schedule the whole day backwards from it.
19:45 · Dinner in the camp
A three course Moroccan dinner served in the dining tent or outside around the fire, depending on the season. Traditional soup or salads to start, tagine or couscous, then seasonal fruit and mint tea. Vegetarian, vegan, halal and allergy requirements are handled if you tell me when you book.
21:00 · Fire, drums and stars
Berber music around the fire, and then, if the sky is clear, some time simply looking up. There is very little light pollution out here compared to the city.
22:00 · Return to Marrakech
We drive back and I drop you at your accommodation, normally around 22:45. If you would rather stay later, or leave earlier because you have an early flight, tell me and we adjust. It is a private trip.

The official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Dirhams cannot be bought or sold outside Morocco, so exchange money on arrival at the airport, a bank, or an official bureau de change. ATMs are widely available in Marrakech, Fes, and Casablanca; in the desert and smaller villages they are scarce, so carry enough cash before heading out on tour. Morocco uses Type C and Type E plugs, running on 220V / 50Hz. Travelers from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa will need a plug adapter; US and Canadian travelers may also need a voltage converter for non dual-voltage devices. Commonly discussed vaccines for travel to Morocco include Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, and Rabies. Bring any personal medication in its original packaging, along with a basic first aid kit and sun protection, as Saharan sun and dust can be intense. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. As a general guide: US, UK, Australian, New Zealand, and most EU citizens typically do not require a visa for short tourist stays in Morocco. Layers matter more than any single item: days in the Sahara can be hot while nights turn cold, especially between November and February. Pack breathable clothing, a warm layer for desert evenings, comfortable walking shoes, a scarf or turban for sand and sun, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.
